What Are Coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness, ranging from the common cold to more severe disease such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-Cov).

How to Help Protect from Coronaviruses

The best way to protect yourself is to avoid being exposed to the virus. The following steps help to prevent the spread of virus:

• Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
• If water is not available ,use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser
• Keep at least 2m away from direct contact – called “social distancing”
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the bin
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
• Stay at home if you are showing any symptoms

Hand Washing

Good hand washing is, and remains, the first line of defence against spreading the Coronavirus. Hand washing with soap is better than with alcohol sanitisers, which should only be used if water is not available. Medicated or biocidal hand cleaners are no more effective than normal soaps.

Hard Surface Cleaning

The best practice involves using a 2 stage clean / disinfect process. If a disinfectant is not available, then cleaning alone has significant benefits.

The cell wall or “skin” of the Coronavirus is a lipid i.e. it is similar to oils and fats. This means that alkaline products that break down fats, oil and grease also have the potential to kill the virus. Scrubbing the surface also helps, as the mechanical action can further break down the cell wall and remove any stubborn grime that could harbour the virus.

After scrubbing the surface, rinse or wipe over the surface with a damp cloth to remove residue. Then dispose of the cloth.

Disinfection

Decontamination: for cleaning high risk areas or decontamination of areas where there has been confirmed infection, disinfect area with Bleach diluted 1:40. Bleach is widely acknowledged as the most effective disinfectant versus COVID-19 and is recommended by organisations such as the World Health Organisation and NHS.

Precautionary cleaning: for precautionary cleaning of low risk areas, other types of disinfectant can be used. These should contain active ingredients known to have viricidal properties. Chemical disinfectants can take longer to work than Bleach, so ensure contact time is at least 5 minutes and if possible allow to air dry.

• Minimising access to our showrooms
• Following NHS advice on hand washing
